After Notre Dame was thumped by Ohio State, 34-20, in the Fiesta Bowl, Irish fans immediately began dreaming of another shot at the Buckeyes in the 2006 national championship game. But a chance for some revenge will come earlier. Next Saturday night (check local TV listings), ND strong safety Tom Zbikowski will fight at Madison Square Garden against heavyweight Robert Bell--an Ohioan and a Buckeyes fan. Bell plans to wear an Ohio State jersey into the ring.
"I consider that a personal affront to myself and my teammates," Zbikowski says, "and I'm going to look to punish him as much as possible before knocking him out." Zbikowski (6-0, 208)--projected by War Room scouts as a second-round pick in the 2007 NFL draft--is known more for his football skills, but boxing is nothing new to him. The suburban Chicago native started hanging around the gym at age 4. He jumped into the ring when he was 10, was a three-time Silver Gloves national finalist as a teen and compiled a 67-13 record as an amateur.
Promoters discovered Zbikowski at a charity match outside Chicago in March. He began training after ND's spring football game, and after his final exams he flew to Miami to work with Angelo Dundee, who has trained Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard.
