Emma Dunlop A YORKSHIRE councillor escaped jail yesterday, despite leaving two children home alone with a stash of guns and a knife.
Tory councillor John Smith left the children alone for three hours while he went to see decorators, Sheffield Crown Court heard yesterday.
Police had to force their way into his locked Barnsley home in June, where they found two distraught boys aged eight and four, the court heard.
