Center plans weekend of volunteer activities.(B SECTION)

In October, Sarasota may become a better place to live, due to a surge of weekend-long volunteering.

That's the hope of the Friendship Volunteer Center as it prepares for Make a Difference Weekend, scheduled for Oct. 20-22.

The idea is to extend the concept of Make a Difference Day -- a national day that promotes volunteerism -- to the whole weekend, encouraging local organizations and individuals to participate in volunteer projects.
