MANATEE COUNTY -- More than a dozen storefront gambling clubs with names like Lucky Stars, Spin N Win and Jokers Wild turned a stretch of 14th Street West into a mini Las Vegas strip.

The clubs awarded gift cards instead of cash, apparently under the impression non-cash jackpots exempted them from the state's gaming laws.

Sheriff's officials say they were wrong.

Deputies on Monday raided 16 gaming operations along 14th Street West and elsewhere in Manatee County, confiscating slot machines and thousands of dollars and arresting several managers, sheriff's officials said.
