June 1, 2006 (FinancialWire) Novartis (NYSE: NVS) received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its generic human growth hormone Omnitrope Wednesday, a first for the domestic regulator.

Omnitrope, a generic version of Pfizer's (NYSE: PFE) Genotropin, will also compete with Serono's (NYSE: SRA) Saizen. The decision marks the first time a generic version of a biotech drug has been approved in the U.S.
