May 30--The environmentally-conscious "green building" philosophy has produced more roundtable discussions than results in Las Vegas. A local commercial developer hopes to change that.
Las Vegas-based Glen, Smith & Glen is spearheading green building with three office parks and two mixed-use projects in the southwest valley. Green building, which uses energy-conserving materials and construction methods, is the next step toward creating a better commercial and residential product, said Kenneth Smith, principal of the firm.
"Economically, it is a better option for owners and tenants," Smith said, "and environmentally, it is a better choice for the community."
Glen, Smith & Glen is building Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified office shells in the final 350,000-square-foot phase at The Park at Spanish Ridge, a $75 million project under construction at the Las Vegas Beltway and Russell Road. Smith said his firm builds a "cold dark shell," which means it has no heating or electricity, and sells it to the tenant, who then finishes...
