Palmetto native Lastings Milledge, 21, got the telephone call he had been waiting for his entire life Tuesday -- an invite to play right field for the first-place New York Mets.
Milledge, who flew to New York from Providence, R.I., Tuesday afternoon, was given a standing ovation by the Shea Stadium crowd in New York before his first at-bat. Milledge lined out to shortstop. He later got his first major league hit, a double leading off the seventh, in a 7-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
