Insurers are refusing to pick up the bill for the 5000 daily thefts from gardens and outbuildings. Almost GBP4bn was spent last year on garden products, according to the Horticultural Trades Association, but most insurance policies offer limited cover for items that are kept in the open - shrubs, plants and trees are usually excluded.
