The police have initiated new moves to speed up the fight against uninsured drivers, after they found insurers' red tape was preventing them from dealing with this crime effectively.
Post Magazine can reveal that the police plan to create a single point of contact at the Motor Insurers' Bureau to address delays they said were being caused by cautious insurer staff refusing to divulge information to roadside police officers.
The trials, due to begin this week, will be carried out by West Yorkshire and the London Metropolitan police forces during the next two months.
Neil Drane, head of the Motor Insurers' Information Centre, said: "We are piloting an exercise with the police to analyse the problems the police have encountered when accessing the Motor Insurance Database at the roadside."
