(From The Northern Echo)
Byline: IAN LAMMING
Fresh air and exercise are just a few of the health benefits of the game of golf. But as IAN LAMMING discovers, a bit of coaching also goes a long way to getting the most out of the sport
TAKE up the stance, swing the club and thwack. . . Now that has to be good for you as the tiny white ball flies almost out of sight. Take up the wrong stance, flail the club and whoosh. . .
Now that's not so good as the air shot jars the back and there's no inner glow from the satisfaction of watching the ball hurl itself towards the pin. The difference? Fifteen minutes coaching from the course professional.
"Just put the club down for a second and pretend you are skimming a stone across a lake, " says professional coach Steven Carpenter, who is based at Headlam Hall, between Darlington and Barnard Castle. "Now pick up the club and use the same motion, so you are transferring your weight from one foot to the other, and let the club swing."
One thwack later and with very little effort, the ball flies off the tee in the right direction - and the rosy glow is there.
