SIR: Bob Day (January-February 2006) is quite right in pointing to the awful and awesome charges being laid upon young marrieds trying to find a home in the cities of Australia (especially Sydney).
The shift from rate-financed infrastructure to up-front "user charges" has meant that, like the Carthaginians or the ancient ones of the Greek gods, Australia's Baby Boomers are devouring their children.
What was handed gratis to one generation or was allowed to be paid off from the value of the land benefited is now expected to be paid for again or up-front by maturing children with higher real lifetime tax burdens and fewer social services to help them form their own families. Meanwhile charges for "public utilities" have risen remarkably through a nice combination of guilt tripping and avarice (witness water and electricity charges and the dividends and charges stripped out by governments!).
