Protectionism, not racism.(Letters)(Letter to the editor)
SIR: Keith Windschuttle's thesis (March 2006) that the White Australia policy was not basically racist is supported by the case of the Chinese cabinetmakers in early twentieth-century Melbourne.
The proportion of the Chinese population in Melbourne engaged in cabinetmaking was an astonishing 31 per cent at the 1911 census and at the turn of the century Chinese cabinetmakers supplied well over half the tables, dressers and bedroom suites made or imported into Victoria.
The situation created much antagonism from the "European" cabinetmakers and the furniture unions and brought strong political pressure, which led to several inquiries and royal commissions.
