They proved it through the first two playoff rounds and again at the start of the Eastern Conference finals against the Hurricanes. Fold after key defenseman Teppo Numminen was sidelined by an injury in the first period? Not a chance.

After center Tim Connolly's concussion in the second round, Derek Roy took over and didn't miss a beat. Defenseman Dmitri Kalinin's bum ankle, suffered during that same series against the Senators, put journeyman Rory Fitzpatrick on the spot. No problem; Fitzpatrick, Ruff says, is "probably more physical, and he has an offensive side to him." And when Numminen was hurt, the Sabres found ways to win Game 1, 3-2, despite having only five defensemen available. Now Ruff might call upon on Doug Janik, who hasn't played in an NHL game this season, to step in.
