The Chargers' first-round pick, CB Antonio Cromartie, will be a big project. He stood out at rookie camp for his skills, but he also got lost at times and easily was duped on routes. That wasn't a surprise considering he didn't play in 2005 because of a knee injury. ... Panthers converted OLB Thomas Davis was excellent at dropping into coverage at the team's minicamp. That was expected because Davis was a safety in college. His bigger challenge is showing he can be solid against the run. Davis is a willing tackler but never has had to consistently attack the running game. ... Give Rams rookie Joe Klopfenstein the early edge over fellow rookie Dominque Byrd in the battle for the starting tight end job. Both looked impressive catching the ball, but the speedy Klopfenstein can get downfield fast, which could make him effective on deep seam routes. ... Giants rookie WR Sinorice Moss looked even quicker than advertised and turned heads with his burst. ... TE Marcedes Lewis, the Jaguars' 2006 first-round pick, will be a major factor in the offense. Lewis was the club's leading receiver at minicamp and showed the ability to get open in the middle of the field. Look for the club to rely heavily on two-tight end formations with Kyle Brady and Lewis. ... Packers G Junius Costen started on the right side, and the promotion will be permanent if he plays well. Coston (6-3, 317) is light on his feet despite his size. He got the job because Kevin Barry reported overweight .... After starting 16 games in 2004, Texans LT Seth Wand fell out of favor with the previous coaching staff, but the new coaches love his athleticism, size and skills. Wand must improve his technique, but coaches are counting on him to make strides quickly. ... Rookie WR Michael Spurlock, a college quarterback, has the quickness and speed to excel at returning punts for the Cardinals. ... Brad Smith, another college quarterback, made his debut at wide receiver with the Jets and showed good speed and cutting ability. But he struggled against press coverage and dropped a few balls. The Jets could give Smith a look at running back if things don't work out at wideout.
