STEELERS RB Duce Staley is in good health and is expected to be a great complement to the speedy Willie Parker in the backfield. Staley, inactive for 11 games last year because of assorted injuries, likely will be a more productive No. 2 back than Jerome Bettis was last year because Staley hits the hole quicker and breaks a lot of tackles. ... The TITANS are cautiously optimistic about WR Tyrone Calico. He has been slowed by injuries the past two seasons but has shown good burst in recent weeks. Calico (6-4,222) is strong but must prove he can catch the ball in games consistently. ... With WR Braylon Edwards questionable for the season because of knee surgery, second-year WR Joshua Cribbs has a shot at the BROWNS' No. 3 job. A nimble-footed quarterback at Kent State, Cribbs still has a lot to learn about being a receiver and lacks elite speed, but he has great run-after-the-catch promise. ... With TEXANS MLB Kailee Wong (knee) likely out for the first five to eight games, the starting job is free-agent signee Sam Cowart's to lose. Cowart is instinctive and tough, but at 31, he must prove he is durable. ... A year ago, new BRONCOS DE Kenard Lang was converted to a 3-4 outside linebacker in Cleveland and learned how to handle coverage responsibilities. Because of that, Lang believes his footwork has improved, which ought to help him as a pass-rushing end. ... BILLS second-year TE Brad Cleslak has impressed the new coaching staff with his speed and athleticism and has jumped to the No. 2 tight end spot on the depth chart. Cieslak (6-3,262) was known mostly for his blocking after joining the team as an undrafted free agent last year, but he is improving rapidly as a receiver. ... The BENGALS' Kelley Washington (6-3, 216) is a big, physical receiver who is difficult to contain in single coverage, but he lacks explosive speed. He's working to get faster, but if he can't get the separation needed to enhance the team's vertical passing attack he'll be reduced to a limited role. ... RAIDWERS TE Randal Williams, a former wide receiver, could challenge Courtney Anderson for the starting spot. Williams has added weight without losing much speed and has improved his blocking. His receiving skills help him create matchup problems for defenses. ... The DOLPHINS signed LT LI. Shelton to start ahead of incumbent Damion McIntosh. The club believes Shelton is a better run blocker and is more athletic than McIntosh. It also thinks Shelton is an intelligent player who will respond positively to line coach Hudson Houck's approach. ... The COLTS will give Gilbert Gardner the first opportunity to replace SLB David Thornton, who signed with the Titans. Gardner is fast and athletic but lacks experience, partly because of his inability to stay healthy. ... CHARGERS OLB Shaun Phillips is amazingly quick off the line and could start for most teams, but he's stuck behind Steve Foley and Shawne Merriman. If Foley, who missed time last year because of an injury, is healthy, look for Phillips to rotate in on passing downs to keep Foley and Merriman fresh. ... RAVENS second-year OT Adam Terry wasn't nearly aggressive enough last season, but he is a decent pass blocker and gets leverage with his long arms. If he becomes more powerful as a run blocker, he'll have a chance to replace starting RT Tony Pashos, who struggles in that area. ... LE Shaun Ellis has the size and strength to play in a two-gap system, so look for him to make an easy transition to the JETS' 3-4 scheme. Ellis (6-5,285) never has been a pure speed rusher; he always has relied on power. ... The JAGUARS recently signed WRs Randy Hymes and Troy Edwards. Hymes (6-3, 211) is tall and athletic but has trouble getting off the line. Edwards (5-10, 195) is undersized but quick. Neither is the deep threat the team needs after the retirement ...
