CHICAGO CUBS
3B Aramis Ramirez stuck to his offseason conditioning program, but he seems to be a magnet for injuries. He has hurt his buttocks and strained his back. His problems resulted from swinging too hard. ... RHP Jae Kuk Ryu has stopped trying to overwhelm hitters with his velocity and is learning to pitch. He also received a confidence boost during his brief call-up. Ryu was optioned to Class AAA Iowa last week when RHP Kerry Wood was activated from the D.L. FIRST QUARTER GRADES: Offense: D CF Juan Pierre hasn't provided a spark, and 1B Derrek Lee's wrist injury created a huge hole. Pitching: C Wood is back, and RHP Carlos Zambrano is finding his groove. Defense: C SS Renny Cedeno is solid, but the outfield arms are weak and teams have been running wild on C Michael Barrett.--Carrie Muskat
MILWAUKEE BREWERS
SS J.J. Hardy's ankle injury affects the team's depth. Utilityman Bill Hall is an able replacement on offense, but he may not be quite as dependable as Hardy on defense. When Hall plays every day, IF Jeff Cirillo and OF Brady Clark are forced into action more often. ... When closer RHP Derick Turnbow struggled recently, he got back on track by using his changeup instead of his usual combination of fastballs and sliders. FIRST QUARTER GRADES: Offense: B+ The team has shown an ability to manufacture runs, especially late in games. Pitching: C Injuries to RHPs Ben Sheets and Tomo Ohka have hurt; LHP Chris Capuano has pitched like an ace. Defense: C- 2B Rickie Weeks is a liability, but 1B Prince Fielder is surprisingly good.--Adam McCalvy
CINCINNATI REDS
The return of IF Rich Aurillia (groin), one of the team's most reliable hitters with runners in scoring position, is important. Aurilia often plays first base against lefthanded pitchers, and his ability to play all infield positions gives starters a chance to rest. ... In an effort to keep him healthy, the club will give CF Ken Griffey days off, especially because the knee that sidelined him for a month isn't 100 percent. Griffoy, though, says he is willing to play through discomfort. FIRST QUARTER GRADES: Offense: B The team has mixed small ball with its power. Pitching: C There has been little help for two starters, RHPs Brenson Arroyo and Aaron Harang, and two relievers, RHPs Todd Coffey and David Weathers. Defense: D The pitching is not solid enough to afford having so many extra outs given away.--Mark Sheldon
