BALTIMORE ORIOLES
The club says RHP Daniel Cabrera's shoulder inflammation, which landed him on the D.L. last week, did not contribute to his poor control. Cabrera, who began the week tied for the major league lead in walks, hasn't taken to pitching coach Leo Mazzone's teaching as quickly as the Odoles would've liked. The club recalled RHP Hayden Penn from Class AAA Ottawa to replace Cabrera. ... RHP Chris Britton, who was recalled when Cabrera went down, is regarded as a future front-line reliever.
FIRST QUARTER GRADES: Offense: C The stars are hitting well, but the rank and file has been tepid. Pitching:. D The rotation and bullpen share equal blame for the staff's being among the worst in walks and runs allowed. Defense: B It's especially strong up the middle with an above-average double-play combo, an elite catcher and a ballhawking center fielder. --Spencer Fordin
BOSTON RED SOX
The trade for OF Wily Mo Pena is beginning to pay dividends. With CF Coco Crisp (finger) sidelined longer than expected, Pena has become a force at the plate. He also is holding his own in the field. Look for him to be an everyday player in 2007. ... C Jason Varitek carded his September slump into this season, but the club is confident his numbers will improve by year's end. Varitek is well-conditioned and is one of the hardest workers in the game.
FIRST QUARTER GRADES: Offense: B Timely hits have been the norm, but LF Manny Ramirez's production has been lacking. Pitching: C+ RHP Jonathan Papelbon, the closer, has been the club's MVP. The rotation has been inconsistent; the fourth and fifth slots are concerns. Defense: A- This is the most improved aspect of the club. SS Alex Gonzalez makes the entire infield better. 1B Kevin Youkilis is better than advertised.--Ian Browne
