White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen calls the play Tadahito Iguchi made on Bengie Molina "one of the best plays I've ever seen by any infielder." A longtime scout says it's the best play he has ever seen by a second baseman. If you haven't seen it, turn on the TV whenever defensive highlights for 2006 are shown. It'll be replayed for sure.
The situation: White Sox lead the Blue Jays, 4-2. Ninth inning, one out. There's a runner on first base and Molina, the Blue Jays' catcher, is at the plate. He hits a high chopper that bounces over closer Bobby Jenks. After another bounce, Iguchi reaches the ball in a headlong fall. Instead of being satisfied with keeping the ball in the infield, he pushes off the ground with his glove and throws out the slow-footed Molina.
Perhaps the only person not overly impressed with the play was the guy who made it. Iguchi explains why.
* From the moment the ball came off Molina's bat, I thought I had a chance to get him out at first. The ball came toward me by taking a high bounce over the pitcher's head. It bounced once more and, from my vantage point, was moving to my right as I was running in. I knew the runner wasn't that fast, and I felt if I tracked the ball's movement and took a good route to it, I'd have a chance to throw him out.
* I thought my only chance was taking a direct route to the ball and squaring up to it. I didn't sense I had the luxury of attacking it any other way. The possibility of a wild throw never entered my mind because I was completely consumed with making the play; however, afterward, I remember thinking, 'Man, I'm lucky I didn't throw that away' I realized how tough a play it really was after it was over, and it gave me a little buzz to think I got him out. If I hadn't made the throw, it would have been first and third with one out and the go-ahead run at bat, so I had to get that out."
