Eighteen Pro class riders made the trip to the Racetown 395 motocross track in Adelanto, Calif., for the second round of the Yamaha ITP QuadCross series. The nearly full gate meant in order to reach the main motos, racers had to qualify in heat action. Despite some cooler than normal temps and a light rain the previous night, the Racetown track looked prime for all 147 racers who entered.
It wasn't really the track that challenged the pro riders, however, but rather a decision to restart Moto 1 and a quirky gate. The one way to trump the gate controversy and tame the tight track was to aim for the holeshot.
Crank Up The Heat
Heat 1 was more intense than the second qualifier. A Honda-mounted Jeff Spooner took off with the holeshot and was closely followed by Dustin Nelson and Josh Frederick. On the track's lengthy straight, Nelson used his YFZ's power to catch and pass Spooner for the lead. The Yamaha rider built a lead from there as Spooner was left to defend second from Frederick and rookie Dustin Terry. Spooner held off both riders to finish second behind Nelson. During the chase for second place, Frederick and Terry began their own battle for the third position. In the end, Terry's Yamaha crossed the finish line ahead of Frederick and his Honda.
The Heat 2 action was fast paced, but a Yamaha-mounted Mike Machado led from the holeshot to the checkered flag. Finishing in second was another Yamaha-mounted racer in Jeremy Schell. Doug Eichner literally earned the...
