When Grace Dalrymple Elliott became pregnant in 1781, four men claimed paternity, including the Prince of Wales and Lord Cholmondeley. She'd already been married, divorced, kidnapped by her brother and placed in a convent, and painted by Thomas Gainsborough. (Elliott would later be imprisoned by French revolutionaries and allegedly spurn Napoleon's offer of marriage, but that's another story.) That portrait hangs in the Annie Laurie Aitken Galleries in the Metropolitan Museum. On May 1, Mrs. Elliott will gaze down upon the Costume Institute ball and no doubt smile at the tameness of it all.
