An alleged gang rape by three men on the elite lacrosse team at Duke University NC has devastated the campus. Tensions and criticism of the administration's timing and handling of the allegations are high and the future of the lacrosse team is in question.
Duke President Richard Brodhead cancelled the remainder of the team's season, its head coach resigned, community members have held regular protests, several lacrosse recruits have chosen to play elsewhere and two white players have been arrested and posted $400,000 bail while identification of a third seemed imminent.
The incident took place at an off-campus house party on March 13. The accuser, a student at North Carolina Central University, was hired as an exotic dancer supposedly for five men at a bachelors' party. The woman, who is black, claims that more than 40 attended the party, where three white members of the team raped and sodomized her.
Immediately after the party, a member of the lacrosse team sent an email stating that as a sequel to "tonight's show," he planned to invite strippers to his dorm room, then kill and skin them.
Although DNA tests of 46 of the team's players were negative, District Attorney Mike Nifong said, "It doesn't mean nothing happened. It just means nothing was left behind." He said about 80% of assault cases did not rely on DNA evidence.
