GE is recalling thousands of its Monogram 36- and 48-inch stainless-steel gas ranges because of a flaw that could lead to an unexpected fire. The problem, affecting as many as 6,600 ranges, stems from worn insulation on electrical connectors, which can cause sparking to gas-supply tubes, burning a hole in those tubes, and igniting the gas.
There have been six reports of fires, none involving injuries or property damage. The affected ranges were sold from February 2004 to November 2005 by home builders and appliance stores for $4,000 to $6,000.
