As a competitive swim coach, I defend competitive venues. And as a city commission member and taxpayer, I have interest in city betterment, tax rate and accessibility. While Randy Mendioroz's article, "Balancing Act" (March 2006), made interesting points, I caution new construction proponents on just how superficial its statistics are.
Twenty-four pools of six differing types from Western states (averaging four of each design) do not make facts. While the author argues that "it's difficult at best to break even on a competition-only aquatics facility," he has not considered nearly enough data to claim that "historical numbers paint a clear picture."
My experience shows that at our Midwestern, competition and recreation-outdoor facility, we exceed 100 percent cost recovery if the weather is conducive to more than 90 days of operations. Food and beverage concessions are a significant contributor to profitability, a "money generator" not considered by the author. Admission ...
