The European Commission has approved the acquisition of Gemplus, established in Luxemburg, by the Dutch company Axalto.

Axalto and Gemplus both produce and sell smart cards, the technology used in mobile phones (known as SIM, or Subscriber Identity Module, cards), payment cards and government and identification cards. The two companies also provide services and products for the administration of SIM cards that have already been issued.
