An Oklahoma State professor is suing the school, claiming that it discriminated against her because she is a mother.
Susanne Weinberger, an assistant professor, said that the department chair told her not to breast-feed her daughter in her campus office and accused her of using her motherhood as an excuse for poor job performance.
The sociology department did not reappoint Weinberger after her three-year review, alleging poor student evaluations and lack of publications. Weinberger said there's much more to the story. "There is a sense here that mothers should not enter academia," she observed.
Department chair Patricia Bell wrote in a review of Weinberger's work that she seemed to think "the status of being a parent should in some way absolve her from her responsibilities and professional duties." The department, Bell wrote, "cannot be held responsible for personal reproductive decisions."
