Student athletes face mixed messages from their colleges and universities, especially those involved in high profile sports, according to recent studies.
* At a recent meeting of the Drake Group, a non-profit opposing the over-commercialization of college athletics, researchers presented findings about campus recruiting trips. Heather Morris of Ohio University surveyed more than 5,000 student athletes who took recruiting trips from 1999 to 2005 and found some striking trends. The worst behavior was by athletes in the revenue sports of men's basketball and football.
Alcohol was a recurring theme. More than 25% said they consumed alcohol on the trips, 33% attended off-campus parties and 11% went to bars. Additionally, 2% were taken to strip clubs and 2% were given recreational drugs.
* At the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association in April, experts noted that the schools send mixed messages to athletes about how much time to devote to their studies. Eddie Comeaux and Uma Madhure Jayakumar of UCLA presented findings from their study of a Division I ...
