A majority of U.S. college and university students say that religion is important in their lives and that they are concerned about the moral direction of the country, according to a recent poll by Harvard University's Institute of Politics.
In the survey of 1,200 college students, 54% said that they were concerned about the country's moral direction. Seventy percent said religion was very or somewhat important in their lives.
At least half said that gay marriage, stem-cell research and abortion policy provoked questions of morality. Such findings could influence upcoming elections, as 18- to 24-year olds cast more than 11.6 million votes in the 2004 presidential election.
