Minorities are continuing to fall through the cracks of our educational system, according to recent research reports.
Black and Chicano students are about as likely as their Asian-American and white peers to enter college interested in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering or math). But many more of them run into problems that keep them from graduating on time, according to a study done by the American Council on Education.
The study concluded that many minority students have trouble earning the credits to finish college within six years, mostly due to lack of college preparation and working more outside of class. The study of 12,000 entering freshmen found that 22.7% of Chicano and 18.6% of black students started college interested in the STEM fields, compared with 26.4% of Asian-Americans and 18% of white students.
