After analyzing decades of data on MIT's hiring women in the sciences and engineering, MIT biology professor Nancy Hopkins said that except for two spikes, the level of women faculty has remained "flat as a pancake."
Hopkins said the two spikes resulted from the women's movement and legislation in the 1970s, and a report she did in 1996 that inspired then dean of sciences Robert Birgeneau to lead an effort to hire more female science faculty between 1997 and 2000.
Her report also compared the number of PhD degrees MIT granted to the number of women hired over the years. ...
