The curriculum at Manatee Technical Institute doesn't include a course in diplomacy, but skilled negotiators certainly would come in handy right now.
Perhaps a few will be among the crowd Monday afternoon when the School Board and County Commission meet to try to avoid a legal battle over a proposed MTI campus off Caruso Road in east Manatee.
Several hundred neighbors are protesting the project, which calls for a 215,000- square-foot building on the north side of Braden River High School. They say MTI will bring traffic, noise and other problems to their neighborhood.
The opponents want the campus built on land that the school district owns on State Road 70, on the south side of the high school. District officials contend that the site is too small.
