NORTH PORT -- With the school year winding down, parents in the Booster Club at Glenallen Elementary School did what they always do: hold a Spring Fling, both as a fund-raiser and a party for their kids.
In the afternoon before the evening fling, parents and teachers alike were hard at work. Pam Sawyer, head of the Boosters, stacked bicycle helmets on a table, which were to be used as door prizes. Teachers set up tables at one end of the cafeteria, as Dr. Donald Knoepfle surveyed the math fair exhibits at the other end.
Outside, other teachers set up a grill. Penny Simmons and Tina Burrows tested the snow-cone machine the Boosters had purchased.
But their kids had the toughest job, making sure the giant slide and the bounce house were functional. Patrick Thoennissen, 11, Sydney Burrows, 6, and Nicholas Sawyer, 11, proved up to the task.
There was also a science fair, with exhibits filling the large media room.
Later, everyone in the science fair received a participant's ribbon. The math fair was more competitive. The winners were Marylou Edaburn's third-grade class, Anne Merciez's fourth-grade class and Mark Humphrey's fifth-grade class.
