It wasn't long ago that socially responsible investment was overlooked by all but a minority of investors and consultants, as investment guidelines were often perceived as too restrictive. Critics argued that, by imposing a blanket ban on investing in companies in sectors such as oil and tobacco, green funds were missing out on some real growth opportunities. They might have had a point; companies in these two sectors alone account for more than 20% of the FTSE 100 Index.
