LOS ANGELES ANGELS
C Jeff Mathis' struggles at the plate carried over to his defense, so the club sent him down and called up Mike Napoli, another top catching prospect in the system. Napoli doesn't have the defensive tools Mathis does, but Napoli has more power and the club is desperate for offense.... CF Tommy Murphy was called up from Class AAA when RHP Chris Bootcheck (hamstring) went on the D.L. Murphy has the speed to cover plenty of ground in the outfield and a better arm than Darin Erstad and Chone Figgins, who also have played in center. APRIL SURPRISE: 1B Casey Kotchman was on a tear throughout spring training but has struggled reaching base since the regular season started. He has been suffering from mononucleosis and has been fatigued. Kotchman was expected to add production to the middle of the lineup but is being replaced against lefthanders. Instead of taking pitches the other way, Kotchman has been overswinging and trying to pull balls in an effort to generate power.--Mike Scarr
OAKLAND ATHLETICS
Jay Payton likely will continue to play regularly now that RF Milton Bradley (knee, rib cage) is on the D.L. Payton filled in while Bradley tried to play around his injuries. Payton is off to a slow start at the plate, but the A's don't plan on tinkering with his free-swinging approach.... Backup C Adam Melhuse was RHP Esteban Loaiza's regular catcher before Loaiza (shoulder) went on the D.L. With the club intent on giving No.1 C Jason Kendall regular rest, Melhuse now will catch Loaiza's replacement, RHP Kirk Saarloos. APRIL SURPRISE: The club has been high on OF/1B Nick Swisher since it drafted him in 2002, but it didn't expect him to be among the A.L. leaders in home runs and RBIs in his second season. A switch hitter who still has plenty of room for improvement from the right side, Swisher has been far more selective at the plate than he was as a rookie, and his willingness to take advice from veterans has been a huge factor in his success.--Mychael Urban
