CHICAGO WHITE SOX
RHP Jose Contreras continues to be dominant simply by throwing strikes and displaying trust in his 95-mph fastball. He has improved at fighting his way out of trouble.... RHP Jeff Nelson was signed to a minor league contract after a chance meeting with G.M. Ken Williams in the press box in Seattle. Nelson eventually could provide valuable bullpen insurance, especially because it's unknown when RHP Dustin Hermanson (back) will return. APRIL SURPRISE: DH Jim Thome entered 2006 with 430 career homers, but only seven of them came last season, when back and elbow injuries limited him to 59 games. Thome, though, has bounced back in a big way. He set a club record by hitting 10 homers in April and a big-league mark by scoring a run in 17 straight games at the start of a season. Thome's presence in the middle of the order is a major plus for the team.--Scott Merkin
CLEVELAND INDIANS
Rookie RHP Fausto Carmona made a strong impression as an injury replacement for LHP C.C. Sabathia. Carmona, who was sent to the minors late last month, was inconsistent but maintained his poise and composure on the mound. Those attributes go well with a sinking 97-mph fastball. Still, Carmona needs to change speeds better.... RHP Fernando Cabrera figures to be a key cog in the bullpen, even though he was erratic before injuring his heel last month. The club hopes he can get sharp during his rehab stint at Class AAA Buffalo. APRIL SURPRISE: This is considered a make-or-break year for 1B Ben Broussard, and he has responded so far. He batted .415 with five home runs and 20 RBIs in April. Spelled against lefthanders by Eduardo Perez, the lefthanded-hitting Breussard has used his down time to prepare for when he plays.--Anthony Castrovince
DETROIT TIGERS
CF Craig Monroe's recent resurgence at the plate is a result of his being more selective. He has slowed his hitting process, which gives him more time to recognize pitches. Monroe has evolved from a pure power hitter to a solid overall hitter.... LHP Jamie Walker's back has been sore since the start of the season, and the injury is believed to be related to his unorthodox throwing angle. Walker allowed only one run in his first nine ...
