TSN: You're traditionally a slow starter. What has been the difference this season (.367 average after 29 games)?
WELLS: Preparing for the World Baseball Classic helped. I didn't know how different it would be, but I knew I'd be ready mentally. Physically, I've always been there, but you have to be mentally tougher, especially in April when the weather is not as good and the pitching supposedly is a little ahead of where the hitters are. It just took me a while to learn that.
TSN: With two Gold Gloves on your resume, can you talk about what makes you a good defensive outfielder?
WELLS: Defense is the most important part of my game. I've taken pride in it ever since I was a kid. It's a position I grew up watching Ken Griffey Jr. play and wanting to emulate what he did. It's fun to get a couple of Gold Gloves like he has.
TSN: What did you take away from the experience of playing on the same club as Griffey at the World Baseball Classic?
WELLS: It was a joy to be around him and a lot of those guys. It was amazing to see how much Junior swings the bat. He and I hit extra after one practice for an hour and a half. Or he ...
