Providing school supplies is a family affair.(H-T SOUTH)

Judy Alexander has been a constant presence in low-income housing areas of Sarasota for almost 10 years, providing services like free art classes and after-school programs in Newtown.

The most visible activities for Alexander come through Every Child Inc., a 501(c)(3) charitable organization she started in 1999 with a goal that every child in Sarasota would start the school year with the proper school supplies.

The seeds of the nonprofit were sown in May of 1998 when Alexander received a call from a friend at Booker Elementary, who was in a panic because the school would no longer have the support of an organization providing backpacks of school supplies to the students.
