Mallow sugar factory to close its gates for last time.

MALLOW Sugar beet factory will close its gates for the last time this Friday.

While there is much debate surrounding the future use of the factory, the compensation issue still remains unresolved.

IFA sugar beet chairman Peadar Jordan has said EU compensation must go to growers whose livelihoods have been destroyed by the EU sugar reform agreed last November.

Mr Jordan said the IFA sugar beet committee sent a strong signal to Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan that she must allocate 106m to beet growers.
