On New Year's Day 2004, Elnora Denmark was working as a caretaker for retired surgeon L.S. Thompson, Jr. in Dallas when a very unlikely event occurred: a small plane crashed into Thompson's garage, igniting a fire that spread to the house.
Even though bystanders yelled at Denmark to get out of the house, she wouldn't leave without Dr. Thompson. She located him in the smoke-filled house, wrapped him in a blanket, and carried him safely outside.
"There was no way I'd leave him behind and save my life," she recalled in a recent interview with the Dallas Morning News. "I wouldn't have done that for nothing in the world."
