Modest rescuer honored.(Elnora Denmark )(Brief article)
On New Year's Day 2004, Elnora Denmark was working as a caretaker for retired surgeon L.S. Thompson, Jr. in Dallas when a very unlikely event occurred: a small plane crashed into Thompson's garage, igniting a fire that spread to the house.
Even though bystanders yelled at Denmark to get out of the house, she wouldn't leave without Dr. Thompson. She located him in the smoke-filled house, wrapped him in a blanket, and carried him safely outside.
"There was no way I'd leave him behind and save my life," she recalled in a recent interview with the Dallas Morning News. "I wouldn't have done that for nothing in the world."
Dr. Thompson died in February 2004 from complications resulting from several strokes. Since then, Denmark has continued to care for other elderly ...
