I was surprised to see the recent article on music, since I had just returned from playing in the 30th year of the Chicago "Do-It-Yourself Messiah" concerts--I play the trumpet ("Physicians of Note Share Their Love for Music," The Rest of Your Life, Dec. 1, 2005, p. 32).
In addition to the Albert Einstein Symphony Orchestra in New York, there are doctors' orchestras in Philadelphia (where I played when I was at Jefferson Medical College), Los Angeles, and Houston, as well as another New York City group, as far as I know. There also are a few in Europe and at least one in Montreal. I have asked the American Medical Association to try to keep a database on such things, but they seem to have better things to do.
Besides playing the trumpet, I am the associate conductor of the Bloomington (Ind.) Concert Band and utility percussionist and associate conductor of the VA National Medical Music Group--chorus and orchestra--in Washington.
