The Latin Elucidarium of Honorius Augustodunensis is a simple summary, in dialogue form, of early twelfth-century theological orthodoxy. Its unexceptionable contents stand in startling contrast to its exceptional popularity. By the end of the Middle Ages this unassuming little work had been translated into most of the major European vernacular languages, and it was still very much alive in Latin. The longevity of the Elucidarium, the adaptations made of it and the extraordinarily wide range of its readership, are arguably its most interesting features.
