NEW DELHI, May 3 Asia Pulse - India has great potential in the field of nuclear energy and good efficiency in operating its nuclear power plants, said Dr R Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Indian government, suggesting expansion of the nuke agenda.
Addressing postgraduate engineering programme at Bangalore on Monday, he said that India should move towards using more fast-breeder reactors and thorium- based reactors as it has world's largest reserves of thorium. "We can become global leaders in this field", he said.
India, which recently concluded a nuclear deal with the United States, has decided to keep its eight fast-breeder reactors out of the purview of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
There is a vast potential in developing nuclear fast- breeders as the country has achieved a breakthrough in processing low-enriched uranium from rich deposits of thorium.
