TAIPEI, May 3 Asia Pulse - President Chen Shui-bian said Tuesday that March's unemployment rate -- 3.87 per cent -- is the lowest in almost six years, and that the government will closely examine the issue of whether to allow the importation of Chinese labor into Taiwan.

During a meeting with labor representatives at the Presidential Office, he said the government will continue pushing for the inclusion in the Constitution of labor union rights, negotiation rights and dispute rights.

Chen claimed the six pledges which he made during the 2004 presidential campaign have produced positive outcomes, including an unemployment rate of under 4 per cent,

a prohibition on the importation of cheap Chinese labor, a NT$20,000 (US$626) subsidy for workers' technical training, the reform of the pension system, comprehensive labor protections, and the ...
