Despite the popularity of hatchbacks in Europe, Americans haven't been keen on them, perceiving them (somewhat unfairly) as cheap runabouts. Hatchbacks that were more than economy cars have fared especially poorly. Now it's Audi's turn to give hatchbacks a try with the new four-door A3. Judging by our first impressions, it may find a more receptive audience.
The news. Introduced in spring 2005, the Audi A3 hatchback is the brand's smallest, least-expensive entry in the U.S. It's based on the new Volkswagen Golf/ Jetta platform and comes with a 2.0-liter turbo Four that produces a generous 200 hp. Stability control is standard, and the A3 did very well in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests. The A3 is sold with either a manual transmission or a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), a manual gearbox that offers manual or automatic shifting.
