Several Catholic colleges have limited performances of The Vagina Monologues, an Eve Ensler play about female sexuality and violence against women. Activists typically put on the play on Valentine's Day to raise money and awareness to stop violence against women.
At the University of Notre Dame, the school's new president Rev. John Jenkins said the school would allow the play to be performed on campus only in a classroom setting and not as a fundraiser. Last year's event at the Notre Dame raised about $15,000 for a women's shelter and other programs. About 1,000 students signed a petition asking to end the restriction.
The new president of Providence College RI has banned campus performances altogether. Rev. Brian Shanley said the play contradicts teachings of the Catholic Church.
"Artistic freedom on a Catholic campus cannot mean the complete license to perform or display any work of art regardless of its intellectual or moral content," he said.
