PRELIMINARY tests on chickens found dead on a poultry farm in Norfolk, England, suggest they died from the H7 strain of bird flu, and not the deadly H5N1 version. Avian flu is a contagious disease found in birds and less commonly in pigs, with certain strains able to pass from birds to humans.
Although there are 16 'H' subtypes and nine 'N' subtypes to influenza viruses, only the H5 and H7 strains are known to cause the highly pathogenic form of the disease.
