The comments made about the book The Real Lincoln (March 20 issue) do not meet with your normal high academic standards. The obvious bias in the article is clearly shown by the use of the moniker, "The War Between the States,"--a clear term of sympathy for the Confederacy and anger toward the North. The war's official name, by those who were involved, was the War of the Rebellion. The neutral term for it is the Civil War.
Lincoln did promote colonization of blacks to Texas, Central America, or Africa, but not for the reason of purification of the United States. He realized that ex-slaves would not be able to be treated fairly living among the white population and felt that relocation was the only answer. Jim Crow laws, the KKK, and race riots are proof of Lincoln's point.
