It's no secret that traditional rules for getting tenure disadvantage women, who are often busy caring for children, ailing parents or partners.

A committee at the University of Michigan recommended that its colleges be allowed to offer new part-time tenure opportunities and lengthen the time to get tenure from eight to 10 years.

Current tenure rules are based on a WWII model in which men were professors and women were housewives. As a result, women are just 28% of the tenured or tenure-track faculty at Ann Arbor.
