H. Abram Wilson, the mayor of San Ramon, California, cannot be accused of passing the buck when it comes maintaining law and order in his city. A brawl was breaking out in a supermarket parking lot one night in February, and Mayor Wilson charged right into the fracas.
The near-riot started out as a simple case of shoplifting in the supermarket. Three plainclothes store security guards chased the suspect outside into the parking lot, but bystanders mistakenly thought they were muggers and that the shoplifter was an innocent victim! The crowd then turned on the guards.
