Acting on an anonymous tip, U.S. Border Patrol and Drug Enforcement Agency agents uncovered a major smuggling tunnel originating 100 yards south of the U.S.-Mexico border and comes up inside a modern industrial warehouse nearly half a mile inside the U.S., in San Diego. The tunnel, which was discovered on January 25, is nearly 80 feet underground and is reinforced with concrete. It also has electric lights, an air ventilation system, and a pulley system to facilitate the transport of drugs and other contraband. Around two tons of marijuana were found inside the tunnel. This is the largest of the 21 cross-border tunnels that have been found since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
