A new intermodal route is being called the Kansas City Bypass, only it doesn't go through Kansas. I'm referring to the rail route from the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas to Laredo, Texas, on the Mexico-U.S. border. The line is operated by Kansas City Southern de Mexico, the U.S. railroad's Mexican venture, and the name connotes that it bypasses the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which are congested and nearing the limits of possible expansion.

Lazaro Cardenas is not and probably never will be a threat to the suzerainty of Los Angeles and Long Beach as principal intermodal ports. It just may develop into a reliever for the stressed Los Angeles-Long Beach …
